Campuses Get Greener

Date: 11/17/2008 05:28 pm

Massachusetts is considering creating a new commission to evaluate the energy efficiency of its state and community colleges; Rep. Anne Gobi (D) was inspired to propose the measure by a community college within her district that has been completely heated from woodchips for the past three years. Thanks to the Campus Sustainability Program (an effort that began with Project Democracy and the CoPIRG Student Chapter) the University of Colorado Denver is getting solar panels on its Auraria campus; these solar panels are the 5th largest solar project on an American campus. The Auraria campus already derives 45 percent of its energy needs from wind power. Washington University is considering joining the American College and University President's Climate Commitment (ACUPCC). Nearly 80 universities are members of the ACUPCC, an effort to make campuses climate neutral (net carbon emissions at zero) within the next few decades.
