Students Tutor Prison Inmates

Four Syracuse University students tutor inmates of a maximum-security prison who are working toward their GREs. "If prisons are indeed a place for correction, then rigorous literacy programs are essential to giving already disadvantaged inmates a chance to become productive members of society," said Mallory Blackburn, the student founder of the volunteer program. Since students have begun their tutoring program, the GED passing rate for student inmates has gone from 29 percent to 79 percent.
