December 1 was global AIDS
Awareness Day and schools across the country helped to raise awareness and
spread support for individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Florida State University
and the University of Kansas held events to educate students about the
prevalence of the viruses in their states and across the world. UCLA’s Semel
Institute is working to build support for those who suffer from HIV/AIDS in
Thailand. At the University of Iowa, the student-run Global Health Club held
events, fundraisers and activities designed to raise awareness and funds for
the Partners in Health Organization, who provide health care to developing
nations. UNICEF student chapters on several campuses are holding week-long
discussion series, performances and free HIV tests to remind students of the
continuing need for research toward a cure.
