A Little Bit Louder, Now
The Student Coalition Against Labor Exploitation’s daylong sit-in outside the President’s office at the University of Southern California was brought to a halt when administrators threatened the students with suspension, eviction from University housing, and the revocation of scholarships. The students originally planned to remain until their administration agreed to adopt fair-labor reforms. Students were especially concerned with convincing University officials to join the Workers Rights Consortium and the Designated Suppliers Program (DSP), a program that ensures that licensed University apparel is not made in sweatshops. More than 20 members of United Students Against Sweatshop (USAS) and the Student Labor Action Project (SLAP) marched through Pennsylvania State University’s campus to demand that Penn State use the DSP for its clothing.
