The board of the City Colleges of Chicago recently voted unanimously for a 10-percent tuition hike that will likely start this summer. However, the public was not notified of the decision in advance, and legal experts see this as a violation of the state’s Open Meetings Act. According to the Chitown Daily News, the act requires public bodies to publish agendas at least 48 hours before a scheduled meeting so that the public will be informed and involved in such negotiations. However, there was nothing about a proposed tuition hike in the agenda published on the district’s website. After the Chitown Daily News article was published, the board said they would likely post more detailed agendas before going on their meetings next time.
