A Week of Love…and Lovin’

As Valentine’s Day came and went, students commemorated the day of love with more than roses and chocolate. National Condom Week and Sexual Responsibility Week were also celebrated this past week, revealing that there was more on the minds of college students than hearts and hugs. American University’s Women’s Initiative organized and hosted several events in celebration of Sexual Responsibility Week, a national celebration held annually during the week of Valentine’s Day. The week began with a “Passion Party,” the naughty – and educational – equivalent of a Tupperware Party, and culminated on Valentine’s Day with “Give a Rubber to Your Lover”, at which the Women’s Initiative distributed over 2,000 condoms on campus. The University of Maine also distributed condoms for Valentine’s Day in the form of “condomgrams,” bags filled with condoms, lube, and candy delivered anonymously to students’ recipient of choice. The condomgrams were delivered in honor with National Condom Week, a 25-year-old national tradition that began at the University of Berkeley.
