The American Civil Liberties Union has recently sent out letters to 32 state registrars urging them to allow students to register to vote where they attend school. The ACLU also sent emails to college newspapers asking them to alert students to the problems they may encounter when registering and to let students know that they may contact the ACLU for assistance. In 2000, the ACLU criticized the registrar in Fredericksburg, Virginia for rejecting registrations from students with dorm addresses. In 2004 the ACLU provided legal representation to several students from William & Mary whose applications to register in local elections were rejected.
