The battle between Penn State and activist Olivia Guevara officially ended last week, when Judicial Affairs asked for damage fees and issued a seven-year citation on her academic record (criminal charges against her were dropped for lack of evidence). The motives for the University’s prosecution of Guevara are still being questioned, however. The University prosecuted Guevara for vandalism after she allegedly chalked anti-sweatshop messages on a building on campus. She maintains the University unfairly prosecuted her because her views are hostile to Penn State. The free-speech case rapidly grew to involve 48 professors, a local attorney, labor unions, departments from other universities, and concerned students from across the country.
