AIDS Activism Continues

Date: 11/17/2008 05:28 pm

At Baylor, the Student Global AIDS Campaign’s World AIDS Day event featured pictures of 1,000 children infected with HIV/AIDS in Africa; the children were up for sponsorship, and each child who was sponsored had his or her picture removed. At the University of Florida, Vox: Voices for Planned Parenthood, the Student Honors Organization, Recurso, the Student Global AIDS Campaign and the Reitz Union Board teamed up to present the “Breaking the Silence AIDS Film Festival.” At the University of Minnesota, the Black Student Union presented an AIDS Day Celebration that included spoken-word artists, dancers, and a film from a local organization for children with HIV/AIDS. Additionally the Queer Student Cultural Center worked with the Disabled Student Cultural Center to present an educational event, and with the Youth and AIDS project to offer free HIV testing. While students organized a host of events at Yale, the most notable was a student group’s ability to persuade the University not to patent its new AIDS drug, an essential first step in ensuring the drug’s affordability in the world’s poor nations. Finally, American University’s The Eagle offers coverage of a student global videoconference focused on the role of young people in changing the course of AIDS.
