Over their spring breaks, 50 student members of the California
Public Interest Research Group traveled the state holding a series of
media events to promote the creation of a high-speed rail line. The
students carpooled to different cities along the train's route and
biked around those cities to raise awareness for the rail that, it is
estimated, would take 92 million cars off the road annually and
drastically cut global warming emissions. The students’ effort is
another example of students using the “alternative spring break trip” to
move beyond service into other types of activism.
