An Un-named Controversy
Guillermo Morales is accused of being a bomb-maker for a Puerto Rican independence group. Assata Shakur is either the killer of a New Jersey state trooper, or the victim of a racist framing (Shakar was a vocal Black Panther). The two—both of whom escaped police custody and feld to Cuba—were the namesakes of a student community center that houses three City College student activist groups. But when the Room Formerly Known As The Guillermo Morales/ Assata Shakur Community Student Center drew the ire of the New York Daily News, City University of New York’s Chancellor Goldstein demanded that City College’s President remove the sign bearing the center’s name—which was then done in the dead of night (ostensibly to avoid confrontation with the students). Now instead of confrontation, there’s controversy—and plenty of it.
