Appalachia Volunteers

The 600 Appalachia Volunteers of Boston College will head out next week to 36 locations across the southeast. The Appalachia Volunteers program, which has grown tremendously from its pilot class of 12 students in 1978, works to prepare students for their volunteer work with speakers, films, and opportunities to reflect upon their impending trips—all in the hope that students leave for service with some understanding of the places they will visit. The program is not without its critics, however, and this article from The Heights explores (among other things) the motives of the participants, the program’s price, and the social scene that surrounds these service trips.
