Amid the recession, several campuses are working to provide additional aid, allow more aid appeals and create flexible tuition payment schedules to ensure more students can enroll. At St. John’s College in Annapolis the campus administration extended the deadline for aid appeals to accommodate the families whose financial situation suddenly changes. At the University of Maryland, College Park, the new“Keep Me Maryland” campaign has raised $234,000 to provide emergency tuition aid to students. The University saw federal aid applications increase by 12 percent and aid appeals jump 52 percent from last year. Finally, as students look toward paying their tuition bills for next year, many schools are offering a 10-month pay in installments plan and federal loans are an option for students and their parents.
