Arizona State University-Tempe students pedaled in droves last Thursday for the “We ♥ Public Transit” day biking event to advocate for at least $12 billion of funding for public transit in the final version of Congress’s stimulus package. The event was coordinated by the ASU Tempe chapter of the Arizona Student Public Interest Research Group (Arizona PIRG) as part of the state wide “Transit Action Day,” to bring attention to the need for multimodal public transit and the importance of stimulus funds in providing such transit. Earlier that day, Arizona PIRG students collected over 450 signatures on green Valentine’s Day cards for Congressmen Harry Mitchell. The cards thanked Mitchell for being the students’ “green Valentine” through his support of transit funding in the stimulus package. One of the event coordinators, freshmen Kim Pearson, said the present light rail between Tempe and Phoenix was a start, but that they’d like to see more options for students to utilize public transit, such as an additional line between Phoenix and Tucson.
