Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY)
has reasserted that the US Military should reinstate a draft for the duration
of the Iraq War—a proposition considered in some detail by this article from Colorado State University’s
The Rocky Mountain Collegian. While
it is widely believed that Rangel’s proposition is more or less the equivalent
of a Daily Show joke (in other words, a less than serious attempt to illuminate
a very serious truth), The Rocky Mountain
Collegian explores what the proposition would mean for students in
earnest—Rangel’s proposal offers no college exemption. Many people credit the
draft with the end of the war in Vietnam and, conversely, the
relatively quiet lip-pursing of the American public today.
