Howard University's Alternative Spring Break program gathered more than 500 students to participate in service projects around the New Orleans area, including rebuilding homes, tutoring children, removing debris, and gutting buildings. Students from Bates College headed to Katrina-ravaged Biloxi to do service work. A former Tulane student relates his post-Katrina experiences in an autobiographical feature from the University of New Hampshire.
