As part of Earth week, Seattle University students are working hard to spread awareness of the use of plastic in bottled water. The events are part of a movement of students working to eliminate bottled water from campus because of environmental and social justice concerns. Students at Belmont University were successful in banning bottled water this year and students at campuses like Dartmouth, Bates and Portland State have also been holding education and advocacy events on campus in support of reducing bottled water use.
Students from Seattle University’s Ban the Bottle organization are making an effort to collect used plastic water bottles to demonstrate the carbon footprint being made by the students and faculty on campus. Last year's demonstration alerted the administration of the great percentage of plastic being used, and this year students want to spread that awareness to both students and faculty alike. Administrators told Ban the Bottle that they would begin phasing out water bottle sales on campus if the group continued to promote awareness of the effects of plastic bottle use on the environment. Members of the group hope to continue their success this year and come one step closer to removing plastic bottles from Seattle U's campus.
