Four people were arrested at Berkeley law school where protesters had gathered demanding the dismissal of law professor John Yoo. The four protestors allegedly stormed into a lecture hall where Yoo was teaching oh his first day back at Berkeley after spending a semester at Chapman University in Orange County, California.
John Yoo worked for the Bush administration Justice Department from 2001-2003 during which he wrote memos justifying use of torture on suspected terrorists. For this reason, many students and professors see him as unfit to teach at a law school. They are concerned that he may spread his ‘distorted view’ to law students. The activists call for Yoo to be fired, disbarred and persecuted for war crimes, but the University thus far intends to retain the professor. Berkeley Dean Christopher Edley who emphasizes that Yoo is a tenured professor and therefore holds a right to academic freedom and due process.
