The Women's Initiative at American University held a discussion panel and open forum last week in honor of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. The main topic of discussion was the Responsible Education About Life Act, which advocates for comprehensive sexual education, and will soon be reviewed by the House of Representatives. Student and faculty participants further discussed the effectiveness of grassroots efforts in drawing attention and raising awareness for AIDS/HIV, in particular the popularity of World AIDS Day in Africa. The panel and forum were the first step in informing the American University community about AIDS/HIV. The Women's Initiative has more AIDS awareness events planned for the upcoming month.
