Blackface Debate Continues

Date: 11/17/2008 05:28 pm

Schools across the country are still contemplating the wave of race-themed parties that caused anger, sadness, and controversy at campuses nationwide. The Macalester College Student Government (MCSG) held a campus-wide dialogue this week; Macalester was one of the schools where racially charged costumes appeared at a theme party. As members of the student body have pointed out, “white trash” and “pimps and hos” parties preceded the controversial “politically incorrect” party, but raised no red flags. Students at Howard University are debating whether the use of blackface was done out of ignorance, maliciousness, or envy. If you were not taught African American history as part of American history (shocking, but we know it happens) blackface has a long and inglorious place in American race relations. An article from American University’s paper The Eagle finds national student opinions on the matter reflected in American’s own student body.
