California State University and Student Employees' Union Back at the Bargaining Table
The United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America Local 4123 (UAW Local 4123), which represents student employees in the California State University system, has agreed to negotiate with the CSU system to set a new contract. The UAW represents teaching assistants, graduate assistants and instructional student assistants; it called for a strike of student employees on all 23 of the CSU campuses in December, accusing CSU of unfair labor practices. CSU employees are supposed to receive waivers for identification cards and other fees, and a reduced price for student union and health facility fees. In May, the union said that its members were not provided with these benefits and negotiations were taken up last fall. On December 9th the union announced its strike, but the UAW postponed the strike when California State Senator Darrell Steinberg offered to meet with both parties and mediate negotiations. According to the UAW, CSU administrators have declined Sen. Steinberg’s offer and the California Public Employment Relations Board has been called on to mediate.
