On November 18 and 19, a
crowd of faculty, students and staff from the California State University
system gathered at the Cal State Board of Trustees meeting to protest Governor
Schwarzenegger’s most recent budget cut proposal and the Cal State Board’s plan
to deal with it by limiting next year’s admission. The governor’s proposal
would entail a $66 million mid-year cut in addition to the final 2008-2009 cut,
which was $215 million below the system’s operational needs. The reductions
reflect the state’s ongoing battle to manage a deep budget crisis, which may
peak at $24 billion by the year 2010. To cope with the financial losses, the
California State University system plans to cut its admissions by 10,000
students for the 2009-2010 academic year, from 460,000 to 450,000 students. The
University of California system is facing similar budget and enrollment
cuts. At a conference organized by
the University of California Student Association, over 1,000 UC students from
across the state protested at UCLA
to restore funding.
