The University of Pittsburg’s campus environmental group, Free the Planet, has set a goal to collect signatures on a petition to reduce carbon emissions at the university. The group is sponsored by the Environmental Studies Department and places its primary focus on environmental issues that affect Pitt's campus. The petition asks signatories to agree that Pitt should reduce its carbon emissions to zero and aims to demonstrate campus solidarity to university administration. Group members are working on other campaigns to change existing incandescent light bulbs for energy-efficient lights, a campaign to ensure that lights in campus buildings are turned off at night, and a plan to lobby the university for a bike rental program.
