Fossil Fools Day, an environmental demonstration day, has been occurring every April 1st since 2004, turning April Fools’ Day into a chance to take environmental action. This year events, demonstrations, and protests took place across the US, the UK, South Africa, and Canada to end the use of energy from fossil fuels. College campuses have been picking up the efforts as well. The University of Kentucky kicked off their environmental awareness month with Fossil Fools Day. At the University of North Carolina Asheville, students participated in Fossil Fool’s Day as part of their annual Greenfest, a weeklong event to raise awareness on environmental sustainability. In addition to a lecture on the harmful effects of fossil fuels, students at UNC Asheville were asked to call their governor and say “No new coal in NC!” Other Fossil Fool Day participants in Asheville demonstrated outside of the Governor’s office, declaring Governor Purdue to be in bed with Duke Energy, and setting up a bed in front of his office building with people in suits and covered in money.
