Checks and Balances?
Here’s
an interesting case from Florida
State University.
Apparently, the student government of FSU funds an Institute of Conservative
Studies with $20,000 a year of office space, as
well as a director and assistant director. According to several senators, there
was no comparable liberal voice on campus, as mainstream progressive
programming comes mostly through registered student organizations (not exactly
the same as office space and a dedicated director, no?). Senators introduced a
bill to create an Institute
of Liberal and
Progressive Studies (ILPS)—a bill that passed 31 to 10. But in his first ever
veto, the Student Body President Chris Evans struck down the bill, and an
attempt to override failed by one vote. We suggest the upcoming months (and the
next student government election) will be a soda-and-popcorn event.
