Colleges are Battlegrounds for Coal Fight

“Coal is too dirty even for college,” states the Sierra Club’s new web video for their new campaign for a clean energy economy.
By targeting college campuses with coal-fired power plants, environmental groups like the Sierra Club are utilizing college campuses as an incubator for solutions to energy problems and to drive action in the larger community.
The Sierra Club is recruiting student activists to gather petition signatures, solicit faculty endorsements, and organize rallies outside administration buildings.
“[Students] obviously are a very important constituency for a lot of reasons. They care about global warming and want to do something about it [which] translates into broader social awareness and responsibility,” said Bruce Nilles, director of the Sierra Club's national coal campaign.
Lyndsay McKeever joined the Sierra Student Coalition, the Sierra Club’s student organization, at Virginia Tech and interned at their office in Richmond, Virginia after learning about mountaintop removal. The New York Times got McKeever’s opinion on the practice.
"I had no idea when I turned on a light switch" that a mountaintop had been blown up in the past to help make that power, McKeever said. "It really just devastated me."
Student activists are already seeing success. At SUNY Binghamton the power plant has begun to use some natural gas and biomass in the form of wood chips.
The Sierra Club is also running the campaign at Indiana University, the University of Pennsylvania, and 20 of the other 60 campuses that have coal-burning power plants.
