Conduct Unbecoming

We know people have strong feelings about things like homosexuality and blood drives. But we also know that more gets done when people who disagree are at least civil to one another—especially when the people in question are elected representatives. And civility is at the crux of the latest student governance controversy at the University of Chicago. College Council Representative Kyle Lee sent an inflammatory email to another Representative surrounding the latter’s disagreement with blood donation guidelines. The contents of that email have given at least 100 students and organizational representatives the impression that its author is “incapable of maintaining the professionalism and civility necessary to the operations of the Council.” Although the representative has been disciplined, student activists are petitioning for his recall.
