Considering Student Governance
Two articles about student government workings raise issues with implications for the wider student population. From Dartmouth comes an article about the difficulty of recruiting students for a Student Government Task Force, a committee designed to help address complaints about various student governance bodies. Although applications were available to the entire student body, only 12 applications were returned, including six from current Student Assembly members. An article from the University of Florida examines the rise of campaign spending, with two parties running for student government spending thousands of dollars on facebook.com advertisements, paper fliers, T-shirts, and (in the case of the Pants Party) pants.
