Two weeks ago, 24 clubs applied for recognition from the Activities Board at Columbia (ABC), a part of Columbia’s student government. Twenty of the groups have been denied, and concerns about the transparency of the process are surfacing. According Keith Hernandez, the President of ABC, rejections of proposals are not usually based solely on a proposal’s content, as ABC must also consider the likely financial and cultural ramifications of recognition. Each new club means opportunity for Columbia students, but it also means less money for each group as, apparently, the ABC budget remains stagnant.
