Credit Should Stay in Class
Aggressive marketing to college students from credit card companies has drawn national attention in recent months. Schools and students alike are becoming wary of credit card recruiters on campus, offering students free food and prizes for filling out credit card applications. And scarily enough, some schools are in on it teaming up with the credit companies to issue students with “affinity” or “pride” cards that benefit the alumni association or the school itself. But some states are taking action. Illinois treasurer Alexi Giannoulias has announced legislation that will curb credit card companies’ ability to recruit on campus by prohibiting giveaways and restricting access to student information.
