Instead of job searching, two graduating seniors at Colorado State University decided to cycle across the U.S. this summer to raise funds for the Invisible Children Foundation (ICF). The non-profit was created to help children in response to a 22-year-long civil war in Northern Uganda. Earlier in the year, both the bike-riders and students at many campuses organized “the rescue” events to raise awareness of the problems in Northern Uganda.
Right after graduation this month, Mark Kowalik and Kristen DeMint will travel from Oregon to Virginia in an effort to raise $10,000 in donations for the ICF’s “Schools For Schools” program to bring 10 Ugandan schools to a nationally competitive standard after being destroyed by the war. Kowalik, who was on CSU’s cycling team, said he wanted to contribute to the foundation after watching the Invisible Children documentary and asked DeMint to join him for the 4,262-mile trip. The pair began collecting donations at the beginning of the Spring semester through their “Buy a Mile, Teach a Child” campaign on their web site.
