CU students protest military contractors on campus

Date: 1/29/2009 2:28 pm

University of Colorado students and Boulder peace activists protested a group of military contractors appearing at a campus career fair Wednesday. The rally was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday near the University Memorial Center, near where the career fair was held. "This event in particular is unique in that it affords us the opportunity to expose the collective effort of several top military contractors that do recruiting at CU," said Kevin Moran, a member of Students for Peace and Justice. Among the companies present were Halliburton, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, Raytheon Company and Bechtel National Inc. Members of the organization labeled the companies "merchants of death," "international arms dealers" and "war profiteers." Protestors held handmade signs and handed out literature to passersby in hopes of reducing the recruiters' effectiveness. Co-hosted by the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center, the rally featured speakers from both organizations, and included special guest Ann Wright, a retired U.S. Army Colonel known for her opposition to the Iraq war. CU officials said on Monday they defend both the defense contractors' right to be on campus, and the students' right to protest.
