Dartmouth University junior and Democrat Vanessa Sievers was elected Treasurer for Grafton Country in New Hampshire on November 4. Sievers ran against Republican incumbent Carol Elliott who held the position for three years. Sievers won 50.65 percent of the overall vote and 70.53 percent of the vote in Hanover, where Dartmouth is located (prompting Elliott to complain that she had only lost because “brainwashed college students” unconditionally voted for their fellow student). Although Sievers is young, she received the full support of the Upper Valley Democrats and has significant experience in the political world. During the primaries she campaigned for presidential hopeful New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and later campaigned for Barack Obama during the general election. She has also sat on the executive board of the College Democrats since her freshman year. Sievers said she feels fully ready to assume her role as Country Treasurer in January and encouraged her fellow students to take an active role in politics by volunteering or running for office.
