David Horowitz Sparks Controversy at USC

An event at the University of Southern California featuring guest speaker and conservative activist David Horowitz prompted a walkout and multiple student protests on Nov. 4. Student protestors were opposing what they call a racist view towards the Arab world.
The USC Progressive Alliance and Students for Justice in Palestine protested Wednesday night outside of the speech sponsored by the USC College Republicans. Protestors chanted the word “racist,” and “free speech yes, hate speech no,” as people were escorted out of the event.
About 15 members of Students for Justice in Palestine were denied access to the event because of their membership in the group. Heather Larabee, the assistant dean of students and director of Campus Activities, said the University would be investigating the reasons the students were denied access to the event. Earlier in the week, the College Republicans had announced the students would be barred to prevent disruption.
Horowitz focused his speech on the global threat to Judaism through "Islamofascist" attacks. About 10 students stood up 30 minutes into the event and turned their backs to Horowitz before being escorted out by the Department of Public Safety.
Horowitz said the protestors’ behavior was a disgrace and said they were "lunatics the university refuses to discipline."
“Students that invited me, which is the worst part, are attacked and called racist,” Horowitz said. “The administration itself is allowing this fascist attempt at free speech … to defile College Republicans.”
“Allowing him to speak at USC legitimizes his racist speech as something that’s academic debate, which it isn’t,” said Alex Shams, president of Students for Justice in Palestine and a senior majoring in international relations. “What David Horowitz is saying is hate speech and it’s speech that is offensive to a lot of students on campus and is threatening to a lot of students on campus.”
Falicia Mandel, the co-chair for the California College Republicans who served as the College Republicans vice president in 2008, said protestors didn't give Horowitz a chance to explain his views.
“I really wish they would have stayed and heard what he had to say, and then if they chose to ask the hard questions … there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s a better way to exercise what they’re asking for, which is freedom of speech,” Mandel said.
