Double Vision
University of Maryland College Park is embroiled in a fascinating debate this week, which touches on both political beliefs and tactical choices. It goes like this: every year, the anti-abortion group, Students For Life, displays an exhibit called The Genocide Awareness Project. The exhibition, which tries to make explicit the belief that abortion is genocide, juxtaposes pictures of bloody fetuses (really, everyone’s favorite) with photographs of the Holocaust (the systematic murder of Jews in Europe), lynching (the systematic murder of Blacks in the American South), and the Rwandan Genocide (thaaat’s machete-death, everyone’s second-favorite). While the exhibit is undoubtedly successful at eliciting responses, apparently they aren’t always the responses Students For Life intended. Adena Raub, a decedent of Holocaust survivors, has begun a petition entitled "I Am Insulted by the Exploitation of the Holocaust for Political Gain." So far it has over 500 signatures.
