With California, Washington, and Oregon, among other states, voting to legalize the use of medicinal marijuana, it was only a matter of time before schools had to deal with the repercussions. While state law in certain states allow marijuana to be grown and ingested for medicinal purposes, criminal charges still arise due to the federal government’s stance on its illegality. This leaves schools grappling to define their stances on the issue. Colleges like CSU Sacramento believe that the administration is not under any legal obligation to recognize state-issued medical marijuana cards, a sentiment also held by Humboldt State University. On the other hand, the University of Colorado is allowing senior Mike West and attorney Brian Vicente to hold an information meeting on how to acquire a medicinal marijuana card in Colorado.
