The Fremont People’s Clinic in Fremont, North Carolina was re-opened six months ago after two years thanks to a group of Duke University students. One weekend a month students from the Duke School of Medicine’s chapter of the North Carolina Rural Health Coalition travel 70 miles from the Duke campus in Durham to Fremont, a town of 1,000 with no doctors. The students perform routine procedures, including taking blood pressure, drawing blood, and giving shots and vaccines, and gain valuable work experience while giving back to the community.
