Earth Hour

Date: 3/31/2009 3:16 pm

Campuses across the country joined millions worldwide for Earth Hour this Saturday – an hour when people around world reduced their electricity usage for one hour in an effort to raise awareness about how energy consumption contributes to global warming.  The World Wildlife Fund began Earth Hour in 2007 in Sydney Australia, when 2.2 million homes and businesses shut off their power for an hour. Since then Earth Hour has grown into a global event and this year the WWF hoped to extinguish 1 billion lights worldwide. Beyond cutting carbon emission on a large scale, Earth Hour took on political significance this year: participants sent a message to world leaders who will soon be attending the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen that they want action taken to stop the negative effects of Global Warming.
