The Harvard Square Homeless
Shelter recently hosted its opening dinner to inaugurate the beginning of its
active season from November 15 to April 15. The organization, which opened in
1983, is the only student-run homeless shelter in the nation. The shelter,
which offers shelter to 24 homeless people during the cold months, raised
$130,000 in the past year, which will help pay its bills and stock its kitchen. The Shelter plans to run a street
outreach program in the coming year, through which students can continue to
help the homeless. Among other initiatives to empower the homeless, the
Homeless Empowerment Project (HEP) publishes a biweekly newspaper, Spare Change
News: the paper sheds light on important issues from the perspective of the
homeless, and, by its own example, gives experience, strength and hope that
homeless people can make a difference for themselves.
