Exploring an Alternative World

Students from the University of Delaware traveled to Nairobi, Kenya for the World Social Forum (WSF) this past January. This vivid article explores the students’ experiences of Africa, the volunteer work they did there, and the WSF itself. Economists founded the World Social Forum because they felt important global issues (like HIV/AIDS and the results of neo-liberal economic policy) were not being addressed at the World Economic Forum. This year’s WSF drew over 40,000 attendees from around the world. Although the student contingent from the University of Delaware planed the trip independently, the students did procure University funding.
