In response to a number of complaints this election in which students’ political free speech was curbed by campus administrations – including incidents at the Universities of Illinois, Oklahoma, and Texas – the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) has released a formal policy on the subject. FIRE is asking all public colleges and universities to acknowledge in writing that students and student groups can freely express their political ideas under the First Amendment, and that faculty and staff may also engage in partisan political speech when not performing “employment-related activities.”
