Florida Student Group Fights to Add 'Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity' to Non-Discrimination Policy

Date: 2/27/2009 11:00 am

The Coalition for an Equitable Community, a student organization at Florida State University, is calling for their school to recognize and respect students of all sexual orientations and gender identities. The group has proposed adding the words “sexual orientation” and “gender identity and expression” to the university’s non-discrimination statement, which is published by the FSU Board of Trustees annually, and a part of the university’s constitution. The group will propose the addition to the Board of Trustees sub-committee this week. Coalition chairman David Grimes believes this proposal is an important step for FSU. “I really appreciate the steps that FSU has taken over its history to becoming a more diverse and accepting community,” said Grimes. “But there is still a very, very long way to go.” The coalition will hold its second-annual rally for equality this week.
