Florida Students Protest Church's Anti-Islam Sign

Date: 7/17/2009 9:11 am

About 125 University of Florida students and members of the Gainesville community held a prayer vigil in protest of a Christian church's anti-Islam sign. The Dove World Outreach Center put up a sign on its lawn which read "Islam is of the Devil" because the church's pastor, Terry Jones, said the U.S. is losing its "heritage as a Christian nation." He also said the sign is meant to attack the religion of Islam, not individuals, because of its oppressive and violent nature. The sign was vandalized and torn down but re-erected the next day. Protesters of different religious faiths stood outside the center in opposition to the sign. Muslim students said they wanted to show that they are peaceful and loving people and Christian students said they were showing that not all Christians agreed with the center's message. The protestors are hoping to keep the church from posting similar signs, but Jones said more messages will be displayed in the future.
