Getting a Taste of Poverty & Homelessness

A volunteer event, which included students and members of the community, simulated poverty with paper money, "stores," and a "jail."  In "Realville," people were assigned to family units, given a budget and a set of stipulations, and were asked to keep their homes secure, purchase food and medication, pay bills, and go to work or school. In Alabama, students spent the night outside to “experience homelessness”; students were allowed sleeping bags but no tents, and electronic devices were discouraged. Finally, an article from U Mass Boston’s paper The Mass Media explores the issue of homelessness among students.
