On Tuesday Indiana Senate passed a resolution to advance a constitutional amendment that would legally define marriage as between one man and one woman. Following the Senate’s decision, Indiana University’s GLBT community leaders spoke out. If passed, the amendment, now on its way to the House of Representatives, would make it illegal to require agencies to give unmarried couples the same benefits as married couples. The IU student group OUT expressed concern that it will be increasingly difficult to provide support to GLBT students if the law is against them. The group further fears that the university risks losing valued faculty members, and that the damage may even affect the economy, morale, and businesses of the gay-friendly town of Bloomington.
