Global Campus

Date: 11/17/2008 4:28 pm

Colleges and universities across the country have begun taking steps to expand their campuses overseas in India, China, and the Middle East as education becomes one of the most demanded exports that English-speaking countries can offer growing markets abroad. Prestigious institutions such as Duke, Yale, Harvard, NYU, Cornell, U Penn, and others are looking to open global outposts to help attract the best students, escalate the University's global prestige, and provide students and faculty with new opportunities. While some universities are expanding as aggressively as possible, others are wary of spreading themselves too thin, fearing that efforts to facilitate international campuses could detract from education provided at home. New York University is working to open full-fledged schools in other countries and offering foreign students the same degrees their American counterparts receive. Others, like Harvard and Yale, are reluctant to replicate their degrees abroad. Harvard has focused its international efforts on faculty research, undergraduate study abroad, and post-graduate studies. Similarly, initial plans made by Yale to open up a campus in Abu Dhabi ended when school officials refused to offer Yale degrees abroad due to student and administrative concerns that quality control would suffer. Students in particular expressed concerns about the preservation of Yale’s academic freedom and non-discrimination policies abroad. Global issues are felt increasingly acutely on campus as schools increase their global clout, and the number of international students on American campuses grows. As a result, several schools are revamping student assistance programs – psychological, technical, and legal – to fit international needs.
