Got God?

Religion is big in campus papers this week, with Christianity in particular covering feet of the news and editorial pages. The Alpha Iota Omega Christian Fraternity Inc. at the University of North Carolina hosted a Jesus Awareness Week, which featured speakers, workshops, and concerts to raise awareness of Christianity on campus. An article from James Madison University looks at the Campus Crusade for Christ’s changing organizational identity. The group members (at least at James Madison) find their on-campus relevance in turning “lost students into Christian laborers” rather than in shepherding Christian students through their college years; the article points to ways the group has worked to align their activities with their mission. Students at Baylor University are circulating a petition that protests the University's stance on human sexuality, saying that the policy against homosexuality is “offensive, bigoted, and antiquated and wrong.” Students hope the petition will reach the President of the Christian school. An “evangelistic celebration” by Will Graham (grandson of the famous evangelist minister Billy Graham), which organizers plan to hold in Kenyon College's athletic center, has sparked some debate amongst students, faculty, and administrators due to the speaker's sometimes-inflammatory opinions. An opinion piece from Case Western Reserve University argues in favor of teaching religion in schools. An opinion piece from Clemson University argues that biblical literacy should be a part of our public school education.
