Graduate Student at CSUN Released from Iranian Prison

Share |

Esha Momeni, a 28 year old graduate student at California State University Northridge, was arrested October 15 in Tehran. As part of her master's degree thesis documenting the women's movement in Iran through the use of different media such as photography and film, she had been filming interviews of volunteers with the One Million Signatures Campaign. The campaign advocates equal rights for men and women. The current constitution in Iran is framed according to the belief that women are inferior to men.  On October 15, Momeni was pulled over and arrested on Moddaress Highway for allegedly passing another vehicle. Authorities subsequently drove her home, searched her house,  and proceeded to confiscate her computer and all recorded material. It is against Iranian law to film without a permit – before production can begin the government must be informed of the purpose and content of the film. Momeni was finally released on November 10, after the deed of her parents' home was taken as bail. She was held in solitary confinement for nearly a month.
