University of Maryland graduate students are working to unionize, but the next phase of their effort will play out in the state legislature. According to the University’s Graduate Student Government president, the fight for the ability of graduate students to unionize begins in securing them the right, specifically by placing graduate students on the list of state employees who can legally unionize. Students say that wages and conflicts with mentors are two problems that could be successfully mediated through a collective bargaining system. So far the University has not taken a public stance on the issue, and the Dean of the Graduate School has said he believes unionization is unnecessary.
