Greensboro College to Offer Free Tuition

Date: 7/26/2009 6:10 pm

After having to use its campus and the majority of its endowment as collateral for a loan to offset the college’s $19 million debt, Greensboro College is offering freshman honors students four years of free tuition as part of an aggressive plan to increase enrollment. The school states that its enrollment is 1,300, but full-time undergraduate students, who pay the majority of tuition and fees, only account for about 704 students. School officials opted to offer free tuition for freshman honors students who maintain a 3.2 GPA if they pay the annual $8,900 in room and board costs. However, most students did not receive this information until this month after most had already made their college plans.

The college’s debt is due in large part to building new facilities to encourage and accommodate growth.  Recently, the school has added a $5 million student union and gym, a $3 million dorm building and a $2 million piece of property for a sports park and football field.
